Live US News: Trump Halts Canada Tariffs for Minimum of 30 Days, China Tariffs to Begin on Tuesday

Donald Trump has decided to postpone implementing new tariffs on Canada and Mexico for at least 30 days, marking the third time in two weeks that he has delayed imposing the 25% tariffs. While these tariffs have been postponed, China is still set to face an additional 10% levy on its exports to the US starting on Tuesday. The decision to pause the tariffs on Canada and Mexico came after talks between Trump and the leaders of both countries.

The agreements were made amidst volatility in global financial markets, following threats of a trade war involving the world’s largest economies. Trump’s decision to hold off on imposing new duties on Canada and Mexico followed a weekend where he announced tariffs and accused the Mexican administration of an “intolerable alliance” with criminal groups.

Meanwhile, the US is considering merging USAid into the State Department, a move that would align spending with Trump’s priorities. This comes amidst confusion over the fate of USAid, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio declaring himself acting administrator and suspending employees, while controversial figure Peter Marocco was named as deputy administrator.

The Trump administration is also making other moves, such as appointing Michael Ellis as the deputy director of the CIA and opening investigations into allegations of antisemitism at five US universities. Additionally, Senator Susan Collins has pledged to vote to confirm Tulsi Gabbard as the director of national intelligence.
