A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of 744 residents of East Palestine, Ohio, against Norfolk Southern Railway Company and other entities regarding the aftermath of a 2023 train derailment that resulted in seven deaths. The derailment, which occurred on February 3, involved a freight train carrying hazardous materials, including a flammable gas called vinyl chloride. The incident led to the evacuation of residents, environmental cleanup, and concerns about long-term health effects.
The lawsuit, filed on the second anniversary of the disaster, alleges that Norfolk Southern and other defendants were responsible for the catastrophe and demands answers about the consequences for the community. The claims also involve the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and county agencies.
Lead attorneys for the families are pursuing legal action against the defendants, claiming that residents have not been provided with the full story of the incident. The lawsuit details health issues experienced by individuals living near the crash site, including burning sensations, migraines, rashes, and the need for therapy.
The lawsuit also lists the names of the seven individuals who lost their lives as a result of the derailment, highlighting their contributions to the community and the impact on their families. Additionally, a dozen new federal lawsuits have been filed against Norfolk Southern in connection with the 2023 derailment, with allegations of improper influence on state officials through campaign contributions.
