Report: Trump will withdraw US from UN Rights Council and continue banning funds to UNRWA | Latest Update on Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump is set to sign executive orders cutting off ties with the United Nations Human Rights Council and extending a funding ban on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, according to an unnamed White House official. This move is expected to occur as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits the White House, a known critic of the UN and UNRWA.

Trump has a history of withdrawing the US from international bodies, including the World Health Organization and the Paris climate agreement during his first term. The withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council would not be new, as Trump had previously withdrawn from the council in his first term due to “chronic bias” against Israel.

The decision to cut ties with UNRWA comes as Israeli forces have been accused of attacks on UNRWA staff and buildings, including schools where Palestinians sought shelter. The US was a major donor to UNRWA, providing hundreds of millions of dollars annually, but funding was paused in January 2024 due to unfounded accusations from Israel about UNRWA staff involvement in an attack.

As Trump and Netanyahu meet to discuss the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas following the violence in Gaza, the future of US engagement with the UN and its agencies remains uncertain. Trump’s actions are likely to further strain relationships with international bodies and exacerbate tensions in the region.
