Alexander Ortiz, a man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend and another woman, was attacked in a New Mexico courtroom by one of the victim’s family members. Ortiz, 21, was in court for a hearing related to the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Alianna Farfan when Farfan’s uncle and another man allegedly jumped him. Ortiz had been arrested and charged in February 2024 for the murders of Farfan and 25-year-old Nicole Maldonado.
Footage from the courtroom shows one man leaping over a gate to attack Ortiz, with another man joining in. Ortiz’s father also got involved in the brawl. Both men accused of attacking Ortiz, Carlos Lucero and Pete Ysasi, were charged with felony battery on a peace officer and assault. A corrections officer was also injured while trying to protect Ortiz during the altercation.
After being medically cleared, Lucero and Ysasi were booked in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque but later released. Ysasi was Farfan’s stepfather. Lucero reportedly expressed anger over his niece’s death, calling Ortiz a coward for killing her. The incident highlights the emotional intensity of courtroom proceedings in cases of violent crime, where emotions can run high among the families of victims.
