China has appointed the controversial diplomat Lu Shaye, who previously served as ambassador to France, as the Special Representative for European Affairs. Known for his combative statements, including a claim that ex-Soviet states had no international law status, Lu’s appointment comes at a time when China-Europe relations are facing challenges due to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump and strains in transatlantic ties. The appointment also signals a potential shift in the relationship between Beijing and Brussels, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed willingness to find solutions of mutual interest with China. However, Lu’s past remarks, such as suggesting re-education for Taiwanese people and making derogatory comments during the COVID-19 pandemic, have raised concerns among diplomats. Despite this, there has been no public disciplinary action taken against Lu by Beijing. Lu replaces Wu Hongbo as the Special Representative for European Affairs, a role created in 2019, and will be tasked with promoting dialogue and cooperation with Europe to enhance China-EU relations.
