Virginia McCaskey, the owner of the Chicago Bears and the matriarch of the NFL, passed away at the age of 102. McCaskey, who has been the principal owner of the Bears since her father and team founder, George S. Halas, passed away in 1983, was the longest-tenured NFL owner. Throughout her four-decade tenure, she made business decisions that were always in the best interest of the Bears players, coaches, staff, and fans. McCaskey was deeply passionate about the team and its fans, attending every game that she could, celebrating wins, and suffering losses quietly.
She was a devout Catholic who lived her life guided by faith, instilling values of faith and family in every person she met. McCaskey also spearheaded the Bears Care program in 2005, which issued grants totaling more than $31.5 million to improve the lives of people in the Chicagoland community, especially disadvantaged children and their families.
Mrs. McCaskey leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and commitment to the Bears organization and the city of Chicago. She is survived by her eight sons, three daughters, 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. McCaskey’s passing marks the end of an era for the Bears organization, as she leaves behind a lasting impact on the team and the community it serves. Her love for the Bears and her faith in the team and its fans will always be remembered and cherished.
