A study published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association by researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia Board of Pharmacy suggests that the addition of pharmacy services at 44 locations throughout Virginia could help reduce the impact of pharmacy deserts for thousands of Virginians. Similar to food deserts, pharmacy deserts leave residents with limited access to medications, education, and primary care services provided by pharmacists.
The study found that the number of pharmacies in Virginia has decreased by about 6% between June 2016 and May 2024, leading to unseen ripple effects on public health in affected areas. Pharmacists not only provide life-saving medications but also offer health and wellness services such as vaccinations, tobacco cessation, and treatment for various conditions.
Researchers identified 51 census tracts in Virginia that qualified as pharmacy deserts, with urban areas being more affected than rural and suburban areas. By running simulations, the study identified 44 locations where adding pharmacy services could significantly improve access and prevent pharmacy desert status for at least 10,000 residents.
Lead author Teresa M. Salgado emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of pharmacy deserts, especially in at-risk populations and low-income areas. The study provides concrete recommendations for future decisions on how to best address pharmacy deserts, whether through new brick-and-mortar pharmacies or alternative solutions like mobile units.
