Virginia High School League bans transgender women from participating in female sports teams

The Virginia High School League has announced a new policy prohibiting transgender women from playing on female sports teams at public schools, following President Trump’s executive order. Previously, transgender women could appeal to play on girls’ teams, but this option is no longer available. Any transgender women currently on female teams will no longer be allowed to compete. The decision was made after consulting with school divisions and athletic directors. Executive Director Billy Haun emphasized the need to address potential unintended consequences of the new rule. Specific consequences for violations will be determined by individual school divisions. This move follows public support from Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares for a statewide ban on transgender women in female sports. The league is expected to release an official policy in the coming days.
