Twenty-one Special Olympics basketball teams will be competing at Virginia Tech on February 16 for a chance to advance to the state championships. The tournament celebrates Unified Sports, a program that brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to play as one team. Games will be held at Cassell Coliseum and the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Facility from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will include a torch-lighting ceremony at 1:00 p.m. with speeches from Virginia Tech’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Mike Young. Hokie athletes will be on hand to greet teams, cheer on competitors, and present awards. Law enforcement volunteers and student organizations will also assist with game operations and award presentations.
Nancy Morehouse, Senior Director of Special Olympics Virginia Southwest Region, expressed her excitement for the event, stating, “This is an opportunity to share in the joy that our Unified Teams experience through Special Olympics. We are fortunate to have the support of campus groups each year that help create a memorable game day experience for our athletes.”
The tournament promises to be a day of competitive sportsmanship and teamwork, showcasing the abilities and unity of athletes of all abilities. The event is a testament to the power of sports to bring people together and break barriers.
