A winter weather warning has been issued for Hampton Roads, predicting 8-12 inches of snow and freezing temperatures from Wednesday morning through Thursday. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has pretreated roadways and started 24-hour operations to deal with the storm. Crews will be working around the clock to treat and clear roads, with interstates and major state primary routes being the top priority.
During the storm, motorists are urged to stay off the roads to allow crews to work safely and effectively. Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated after higher-priority routes are cleared. To assist with snow plowing operations, the Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes will remain open in the westbound direction until at least 11 a.m. on Thursday.
For information on road conditions, residents are encouraged to use VDOT’s free 511 mobile app, visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov, or call 511 while in Virginia. VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center is also available for questions and to report hazardous road conditions.
As the region braces for significant snowfall and dangerous travel conditions, residents are advised to stay indoors and off the roads until conditions improve. Keeping roads clear for VDOT crews will help ensure everyone’s safety during this winter weather event.
