Born in Freetown, Virginia, Lewis is often referred to as the Grande Dame of Southern Cooking and is recognized for her work as an executive chef and author of several cookbooks. Freeman first discovered Lewis through The Edna Lewis Cookbook and felt an instant connection, comparing the experience to feeling at home with her grandmother.
Freeman has faced challenges in portraying Lewis accurately in the docuseries, but she believes that allowing guests to share their personal stories and experiences with Lewis will help paint a more complete picture of the chef. In the first episode, Freeman visits chef Leah Branch at The Roosevelt in Richmond, where they prepare a dinner celebrating Lewis’ legacy and share lessons learned from the culinary icon.
Through interviews with chefs, cookbook authors, and Lewis’ niece, Nina Williams Mbengue, Freeman hopes to shed light on the impact Lewis had on the world of food and inspire a new generation of chefs.
