Cold alerts prevalent as Arctic air sweeps through US

An Arctic air mass brought record-breaking low temperatures to much of the central and eastern U.S., with cold weather advisories and freeze warnings issued from the Dakotas to Texas. Parts of Florida were warned of wind chills as low as 17 degrees, while North Texas faced wind chills of 10 below zero. Residents were advised to take precautions such as wearing appropriate clothing, wrapping pipes, and keeping pets indoors to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. The Arctic blast broke numerous decades-old temperature records throughout the week, including lows of negative 12, negative 17, and negative 18 degrees in Nebraska cities Omaha, Lincoln, and Norfolk, respectively. The weather advisories were set to expire as the Arctic air mass dissipates, with warmer temperatures expected for most of the country the following week.
