Coastal Carolina University’s president, Dr. Michael T. Benson, has been offered the same position at West Virginia University, according to a CCU spokesperson. WVU’s Board of Governors chose a top candidate during a meeting on Thursday. CCU confirmed the news to students and the campus community, with Board Chairman H. Delan Stevens praising Benson’s leadership during his four-year tenure. The CCU Board of Trustees has already begun a national search for the next president.
Benson oversaw significant developments at CCU, including securing the largest donation in the school’s history and overseeing the construction of the Thompson Library. He also played a key role in the athletic department, overseeing the football program’s new indoor practice facility and several coaching hires. WVU, with a much larger campus and enrollment of nearly 26,000, presents new opportunities for Benson.
Stevens expressed confidence in the future of CCU, saying that Benson’s leadership has positioned the university for continued growth. He believes that the next president will build on the progress made under Benson’s tenure. As the search for a new president begins, CCU is optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead.
