Former BYU runner and Olympian Whittni Morgan secured her spot on the global stage with a third-place finish in the women’s 3,000 meter final at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships. Her performance earned her a spot on Team USA at the World Indoor Championships next month after the winner, Nikki Hiltz, declined the opportunity to focus on the Grand Slam Track season.
Morgan, an Adidas-sponsored pro coached by Diljeet Taylor, will compete at the World Indoors along with second-place finisher Shelby Houlihan. Both runners met the world qualifying standard of 8:33.00. Morgan’s strong performance earlier this month at the Millrose Games, where she finished in 8:28.03, showcased her strength as a distance runner despite recovering from a knee injury.
The World Indoor Championships will take place in Nanjing, China from March 21-23, giving Morgan another opportunity to showcase her talent on the international stage. Morgan previously competed in the Olympics, finishing 14th in the 5,000 meter event after overcoming a knee injury and making the Team USA roster when other athletes chose not to compete in Paris.
Originally from Panguitch, Utah, Morgan broke multiple school records at BYU despite battling injuries throughout her collegiate career. Her recent success at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships and upcoming participation in the World Indoor Championships are a testament to her perseverance and talent as a runner.
