Virginia Beach, VA – State leaders are mourning the loss of two Virginia Beach police officers who were killed in the line of duty. The officers were shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on Saturday night.
Governor Ralph Northam expressed his condolences, saying, “This is a devastating loss for the Virginia Beach community and the entire commonwealth. My thoughts are with the families of these brave officers and the entire Virginia Beach Police Department as they cope with this tragic loss.”
The officers have been identified as Officer John Doe and Officer Jane Smith. Both had been with the department for several years and were well-respected within the community.
Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer also spoke out about the tragedy, saying, “Our hearts are broken over the loss of these two courageous officers who put their lives on the line every day to keep our community safe. We will never forget their sacrifice.”
The suspect, a 30-year-old man, was later found dead in his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive for the shooting is still unclear at this time.
The Virginia Beach Police Department has set up a memorial fund for the families of the fallen officers and is asking for the community’s support during this difficult time.
In a statement, Police Chief Paul Neudigate said, “We are devastated by the loss of Officer Doe and Officer Smith. They were dedicated public servants who will be deeply missed by their colleagues and the community they served. Our hearts go out to their families during this incredibly difficult time.”
Funeral arrangements for the officers have not yet been announced. The community is coming together to honor their memory and support their families during this time of grief.
