Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin launched a new program to assist fired federal workers in finding new jobs. The program, VirginiaHasJobs.com, aims to connect workers with 250,000 open positions, including 100,000 in Northern Virginia. However, Democratic Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Don Scott criticized the governor for supporting mass layoffs while claiming to help those who were laid off.
Indeed, a popular job search engine, expressed concerns about the job market’s ability to absorb the laid-off federal workers, describing them as “knowledge workers.” Despite this, Youngkin emphasized the need for a more efficient federal government and highlighted the Virginia Employment Commission’s resources for the affected workers.
However, Scott criticized Youngkin for not standing up for the state’s residents and accused him of prioritizing support for former President Donald Trump instead. According to the VEC, about 300 federal workers and 120 federal contract workers in Virginia have filed initial unemployment claims this month.
In response to the layoffs, Virginia is hosting a statewide virtual hiring event on March 5 to help displaced workers find new opportunities. With tensions rising over the governor’s approach to the situation, the fate of the fired federal workers remains uncertain.
