NAACP Leader and Civil Rights Advocate Honored and Remembered

Hazel Dukes, a prominent civil rights advocate and president of the NAACP New York State Conference, died at the age of 92. She spent over seven decades fighting for voting rights, economic development, fair housing, and education for all. Dukes was known as “Ma Dukes” or “Queen Mother” and was recognized for her contributions to the civil rights movement. She was one of the few women to lead the NAACP and received numerous awards for her commitment to justice and activism.

Dukes was remembered by leaders across New York, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams, who described her as a trailblazer and a warrior. Flags were ordered to be lowered at half-staff in her honor.

Dukes was involved in the movement for racial equity and was selected by President Lyndon B. Johnson to work for the Head Start program. She remained an outspoken advocate against police brutality and fought for adequate healthcare in underserved neighborhoods. In 2023, she received the NAACP’s highest honor, the Spingarn Medal, from former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Dukes’ legacy will be remembered for her dedication to civil rights and her impact on the community. She passed away peacefully at her home in New York City surrounded by her family. She is survived by her son Ronald Dukes.
