William & Mary hosted its annual Active Citizens Conference, organized by Civic & Community Engagement, with over 75 students in attendance. The theme of civic identity was explored, with a focus on understanding oneself as an agent of positive change.
The event began with a keynote address from Kara Park, a recipient of the John Lewis Social Justice Award, who spoke about her own civic identity development. Students then participated in a variety of workshops led by student presenters from universities such as James Madison and George Washington, covering topics like voter engagement, community collaboration, and language and identity.
Throughout the day, students engaged in dialogue, shared meals, and reflected on their experiences, ultimately setting active citizenship goals for themselves. The event concluded with students feeling inspired and motivated to continue their civic engagement work.
Jeremy Larochelle, a faculty member at the University of Mary Washington and a former William & Mary student, commented on the success of the conference, stating that students left with great ideas and a renewed excitement for their work in the community.
