Virginia time capsule reveals the solution to a World War I medal mystery

The opening of a time capsule from the old Northland Building in Virginia, Minnesota, revealed mementos and medals honoring World War I veterans and gold star families. The biggest find was a medal given to veterans and families who lost loved ones in the conflict, sparking strong emotions from those present. Among the names listed of those killed in battle was Charles C. Butler Jr., whose medal had been in the possession of a local resident since the 1960s. Research uncovered that Butler had served in the Army tank corps and was killed in action in France in 1918. The opening of the time capsule brought closure to a long-standing family mystery for one individual and Mayor Larry Cuffe Jr. hopes to locate the families of other unclaimed medals found in the capsule.

St. Louis County Commissioner Keith Nelson believes finding the families of these World War I service medals would be a fitting tribute to those who sacrificed their lives over a hundred years ago. Mayor Cuffe has put the unclaimed medals on display in Virginia City Hall, inviting people to come and see if they recognize any of them as belonging to their ancestors. The event has sparked interest and emotion in the community, highlighting the importance of remembering and honoring those who served in the military during World War I.
