Virginia Women’s Basketball Team Secures First-Round Victory in ACC Tournament
The Virginia women’s basketball team had a strong start to the 2025 Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament with a 64-50 victory over Pitt in the opening round. Led by sophomore guard Kymora Johnson’s 17 points and seven assists, the 10th-seeded Cavaliers put on an impressive performance.
In addition to Johnson, Breona Hurd contributed 15 points, and Latasha Lattimore recorded a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocked shots. This win marked Virginia’s fifth victory in the last six games, with four of those wins coming on the road.
Next, the Cavaliers will face seventh-seeded California in the second round. Despite the regular-season loss to California, Virginia is looking to avenge that defeat and continue their tournament run.
On the other side, Pitt’s Khadija Faye struggled with her shooting but still managed to secure her 17th double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Panthers’ season came to an end with a 13-19 record.
Virginia’s impressive shooting in the second half, with a 59.3 percent field goal percentage, helped them secure the victory over Pitt, who shot only 23.3 percent for the game. The win improved Virginia’s all-time ACC Tournament record to 38-43, while Pitt fell to 2-12 in tournament play.
This victory gives Virginia a clean sweep of the season series against Pitt, after defeating them on the road in February. The Cavaliers now look ahead to their matchup against California in the second round of the tournament.
