A Republican-led bill aiming to prevent transgender women from competing in sports against biological women was voted down in the Senate by a 51 to 45 vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed to pass. The House had previously approved a similar bill, but without Senate approval, it remains stalled. Among those who voted against the bill were Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.
During questioning from ABC 13’s Brittany Slaughter, Warner cited a new Pew Research Survey showing that two-thirds of adult voters prefer boys not compete in women’s sports. He argued that the issue should be decided at the local school division level, and noted that President Trump had already issued an executive order on the matter with changes from the NCAA. Warner felt that federal intervention was not necessary given the developments at the local level.
Although the bill did not pass, it has brought attention to the issue of transgender women participating in women’s sports. The debate around this topic continues to be contentious, with strong opinions on both sides of the issue. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how the issue will be addressed at different levels of government and within various sports organizations.
