West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey is considering legal action against the NCAA after the exclusion of the WVU men’s basketball team from the 2025 NCAA Tournament. This comes after Morrisey previously sued the NCAA in 2023 over its transfer policy, which prevented player RaeQuan Battle from playing for the Mountaineers. The lawsuit led to a change in the NCAA’s transfer policy.
Both WVU men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries and athletic director Wren Baker expressed disappointment over the team’s exclusion from the tournament, with Baker calling it a “terrible travesty.” DeVries stated that the team deserved to be in the tournament based on their performance and accomplishments throughout the season.
Morrisey, who served as West Virginia Attorney General before becoming Governor, has a history of taking legal action against the NCAA on behalf of WVU basketball. He stated on social media that the NCAA’s decision to exclude the Mountaineers from the tournament is “wrong on every level” and suggested that more oversight may be needed.
As the basketball community waits to see if Morrisey will follow through on his threat to take legal action against the NCAA, fans, players, and officials continue to express disappointment and frustration over WVU’s exclusion from the tournament.
