Istanbul Mayor, a Key Rival to President Erdogan, Arrested by Turkey

On Wednesday morning, the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, was arrested on charges related to corruption and terrorism. The arrest was carried out by a large group of police officers who arrived at Mr. Imamoglu’s house and took him away, along with a number of his aides. The city’s prosecutor’s office stated that arrest warrants had been issued for more than 100 people in connection to the case.

Mr. Imamoglu, a prominent opposition politician in Turkey, has been seen as a potential contender in the next presidential election scheduled for 2028, although early elections are a possibility. He and other opposition figures have accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government of trying to exclude Mr. Imamoglu from politics to prevent him from running against Mr. Erdogan in the election.

In a video posted on social media before his arrest, Mr. Imamoglu condemned the government for “usurping the will of the people” and expressed his determination to continue despite facing what he described as “great tyranny.”

The situation is currently unfolding, and further updates on the matter are expected. The arrest of Mr. Imamoglu has sparked concerns among opposition supporters and drawn criticism from international observers following Turkey’s recent track record on democratic issues.
