Virginia achieves historic fifth consecutive victory in NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship

Virginia’s dominance in women’s swimming and diving continued as they captured their fifth consecutive NCAA National Championship title. The Cavaliers finished with a total of 544 points, 127 points ahead of second-place Stanford. The team recorded ten event titles, broke six NCAA records, and had five swimmers win individual NCAA titles.

Claire Curzan and Gretchen Walsh were standout performers, with Curzan breaking her own NCAA record in the 200 backstroke, while Walsh broke her own NCAA record in the 100 freestyle. The team also won the 400 freestyle relay, with Walsh sealing the victory with a blistering anchor leg.

Alex and Gretchen Walsh, who are sisters, capped off their collegiate swimming careers with impressive records, winning a total of 25 and 23 NCAA titles respectively. Alex is the only swimmer in history to win individual titles in five separate NCAA championships.

Virginia’s success was also highlighted by their depth, with a total of 10 swimmers earning First-Team All-America honors. The Cavaliers’ performance solidified their status as one of the most successful programs in NCAA women’s swimming and diving history, joining the ranks of Texas and Stanford as the only programs to win five straight national titles.
