West Virginia Defeated by North Carolina in Second Round

West Virginia women’s basketball team suffered a tough 58-47 loss to North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Monday night. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Mountaineers struggled to find their offensive rhythm, shooting a season-low 24.1 percent from the floor. Junior guard Jordan Harrison led the team with 10 points, followed by senior guard Kyah Watson with nine points and a program tournament record 15 rebounds. The Tar Heels held a narrow lead throughout the game, outscoring the Mountaineers in each quarter.
The loss marked the end of a successful season for West Virginia, finishing with a 25-8 overall record. Despite the defeat, the team has achieved 50 wins over the past two seasons, ranking as the third most in program history. This stretch also marks the best two-year start for a head coach in West Virginia history. The Mountaineers also made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2016 and 2017 seasons. While the loss was disappointing, the team has shown significant progress and potential for future success under Coach Mike Carey.
