Declining health forces Texas zoo to euthanize Neb, a white tiger

A Texas zoo recently mourned the death of an endangered white tiger named Neb, who had been suffering from severe mobility issues due to old age. Despite receiving various medical treatments, Neb’s condition continued to deteriorate, leading to the decision to euthanize him. Neb’s companion, Hobbes, is also experiencing mobility issues and is being closely monitored by the zoo’s veterinary staff.

White tigers like Neb are a result of a rare genetic mutation and are considered endangered due to mistreatment and inbreeding by trainers for entertainment purposes. The Gladys Porter Zoo emphasized that all tiger subspecies are either endangered or critically endangered, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts.

Neb’s passing is just one example of beloved animals that have recently passed away, including a bald eagle in Missouri, a cotton-top tamarin monkey in Iowa, and a gray seal pup in Connecticut. These animals were all classified as critically endangered or facing other health issues that led to their euthanization or death.

The real-life donkey model for the movie character “Shrek” also passed away in California after battling various health issues. These instances serve as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts and proper care for endangered species to ensure their survival for future generations.
