The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society is preparing to relocate to a new restoration facility in the Norwich area of Roanoke, marking a major milestone after nearly 45 years at their previous site. The new 16-acre site near Bridge Street will provide a permanent home for their collection of historic railroad equipment while also enhancing restoration capabilities and expanding preservation activities.
The Chapter’s move aligns with the revitalization efforts in the area, particularly the Riverdale development, and the new facility will be located on the former Virginia Scrap Iron and Metal property. Norfolk Southern is providing crucial support during the design and construction phase, which includes plans for a larger building, fabrication shops, and ample storage space.
To help fund the move and new facilities, the Roanoke Chapter is conducting a capital fundraising campaign as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Updates on the project can be found on their website and Facebook page.
The relocation of the Roanoke NRHS Chapter represents an exciting new chapter for the organization and the broader community, further solidifying their commitment to preserving and showcasing the region’s railroad history.
