Virginia March for Life Rally advocating progressive language.

The Virginia March for Life, the largest anti-abortion rally in the state, took place earlier this month, marking its seventh year. Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears and Governor Glenn Youngkin were among the speakers and participants at the event. Sears emphasized the sanctity of life in the womb and referenced a potential amendment to the Virginia Constitution regarding reproductive access and abortion.

Following the rally, anti-abortion activist Lauren Handy, recently released from federal prison, expressed her support for Governor Youngkin and discussed intentional actions taken by her group, the Progressive Anti-abortion Uprising. Handy had been convicted of blockading an abortion clinic in Washington DC and received a pardon from former President Donald Trump.

During the event, a group of Liberty University students and the PAAU protested, highlighting the sexist and oppressive nature of abortion. This activism comes at a time when legislation regarding abortion clinic blockades is being debated in Virginia. Senator Scott Surovell introduced a bill addressing this issue, which was later vetoed by Governor Youngkin, citing concerns over free speech restrictions.

Despite legal challenges and federal court rulings upholding the FACE Act, which prohibits clinic blockades, the lack of enforcement at the federal level and Youngkin’s veto leave abortion clinics in Virginia vulnerable to anti-abortion activism. The event underscored the ongoing debates and activism surrounding reproductive rights in the state.
