Christians participate in Good Friday processions to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Christians worldwide observed Good Friday with processions honoring the crucifixion of Jesus. In Mexico, Catholics in Taxco held an overnight procession, carrying crosses and flagellating themselves in sacrifice for their sins. Dating back to 1622, the “encruzados” carried thorny branches as they walked barefoot to emulate Jesus’ suffering. In Jerusalem, worshippers walked the Via Dolorosa to commemorate Jesus’ final steps with large wooden crosses. In the Philippines, a controversial re-enactment of the crucifixion drew crowds, with a man nailed to a cross for the 36th time. Ruben Enaje, who played Jesus, announced his retirement after this year’s performance. British tourist David Harper described the event as unique and possibly crazy. In the Spanish village of Calanda, over a thousand people gathered to produce continuous rhythms with drums for 26 hours, symbolizing the roar heard after Jesus’ death. Good Friday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which will end with Easter celebrations on Sunday.
