California judge found guilty of killing his wife

A California jury convicted Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson of fatally shooting his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, following a drunken argument at their Anaheim Hills home in 2023. Jeffrey Ferguson admitted to shooting his wife but claimed it was an accident. However, jurors rejected his testimony and convicted him of second-degree murder and a felony gun enhancement. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 13.

The first trial ended in a deadlock, leading to a mistrial, but the second trial resulted in a guilty verdict after just one day of deliberation by the jury. Prosecutors argued that Jeffrey Ferguson, heavily drinking at the time, shot his wife after she challenged him to point a real gun at her during an argument about money.

Ferguson’s son witnessed the shooting and tried to wrestle the gun away from his father. Ferguson then texted his colleagues admitting to the shooting. He was arrested, and a large number of weapons and ammunition were recovered from his home.

Ferguson has been out on bail but was taken back into custody after violating the terms of his release by consuming alcohol. He was released again after posting a $2 million bond but was taken into custody following the guilty verdict. Ferguson had been serving as a judge since 2015 and previously worked as a prosecutor in the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
