Nittany Lions Shine Across Sports Weekend

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The Penn State Nittany Lions showcased their athletic prowess this past weekend, highlighted by a thrilling baseball victory over No. 17 West Virginia and commendable finishes in multiple sports.

The baseball team (25-14) achieved a significant milestone by defeating West Virginia 3-2 in front of a record-breaking crowd of 6,106 fans at Medlar Field. Jack Porter’s solo home run in the first inning put the Nittany Lions ahead, and Mason Butash’s standout performance on the mound, with four strikeouts, limited West Virginia to just seven hits. Fans also set a season record consuming over 12,000 hot dogs. Looking ahead, Penn State faces a tough road series against UCLA this weekend before returning home to play Rider.

In gymnastics, the men’s team finished 5th at the NCAA Championships, marking their best finish since 2016. Josh Karnes earned All-American honors for his impressive performance on the parallel bars and in the All-Around competition.

The men’s lacrosse team (9-3) ended the regular season triumphantly with a 12-4 victory over Rutgers. Goalkeeper Jack Fracyon excelled, making 13 saves and scoring his first career goal. Now, they prepare for a quarterfinal matchup against Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the women’s lacrosse team (7-9) concluded their season with a 13-8 loss to Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten Tournament, though promising prospects linger for next year’s squad.

The men’s volleyball team (13-15) continues their quest for glory, advancing to the EIVA Championship after a successful sweep in the semifinals. They will face Princeton for an automatic NCAA Tournament berth on Saturday.

Conversely, the softball team (20-24) struggled in a challenging series against Iowa, where they were swept 15-4 over the weekend. They’ll look to rebound in their final road series at Maryland.

As the season progresses, Penn State teams remain competitive and spirited, showcasing the determination of the Nittany Lions.
