Virginia Baseball Dominates Navy, 5-1, Before Exam Break
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team secured a decisive victory against Navy on Wednesday afternoon, triumphing 5-1 at Disharoon Park in their final game before the exam break. With this win, the Cavaliers improved their season record to 26-16, while Navy fell to 23-23.
The standout performance came from Virginia’s pitching staff, consisting of Chris Arroyo, Wes Arrington, Matthew Buchanan, and Drew Koenen, who collectively limited Navy to just one run off three hits and struck out nine batters. Arroyo set the tone with a career-long outing of 4.2 innings, allowing only one run while not factoring into the decision.
Offensively, Jacob Ference shone for the Cavaliers, starting the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning—his fifth of the season. Virginia further extended their lead in the fourth inning, with key contributions from Chone James and Ference, who both secured RBIs. A passed ball by Navy contributed another run, bringing the score to 4-0.
Navy managed to score in the fifth, capitalizing on a leadoff walk against Arroyo. However, Virginia responded with a final run in the seventh, courtesy of Aidan Teel’s double and Henry Ford’s subsequent single, concluding the game at 5-1.
Koenen earned his fourth win of the season, dominating in relief without allowing a baserunner while recording three strikeouts over 2.1 innings.
This victory marks Virginia’s 20th win in their last 30 meetings against Navy and extends their winning streak over the Midshipmen to 10 games. The Cavaliers will break for exams before returning to action on May 7 against Towson, with the game starting at 6 p.m. on ACCNX and WINA (98.9 FM/1070 AM).
