Sport Psychology Introduces Initiative for Mental Health Awareness Month

Virginia Tech Athletics Launches Mental Health Awareness Fundraising Initiative

BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech Athletics, in collaboration with the Virginia Tech Hokie Club, proudly announces the relaunch of its annual Mental Health Awareness Month fundraising initiative. Kicking off on Thursday, the campaign will run throughout May, with the goal of enhancing mental health services for the university’s student-athletes.

This initiative aims to bolster financial support for Counseling and Athletic Mental Performance (CAMP), which plays a crucial role in promoting mental health for over 600 student-athletes in Blacksburg. Dr. Gary Bennett, Senior Associate Athletic Director and head of CAMP, emphasized the significance of community support, stating, “Thanks to the incredible generosity of Hokie Nation, we’ve made great progress in promoting better mental health. These funds are vital for providing the best possible care.”

Donations to the Sport Psychology department will directly impact CAMP’s ongoing mental health initiatives, which include one-on-one counseling, annual suicide prevention workshops, and team-based mental health programs throughout the year.

Chris Helms, Executive Associate AD for Sport Administration, remarked on the importance of the sports psychology team, highlighting their professionalism and the supportive environment they foster. “Their approachability encourages athletes to seek help without hesitation, helping to dismantle stereotypes associated with mental health support,” he said.

Supporters are encouraged to contribute to this vital cause by donating online. Their involvement is instrumental in ensuring that student-athletes have access to the mental health resources they need. To support this important campaign, please visit the official fundraising page.

Continued contributions will aid Sport Psychology and CAMP’s efforts in creating a healthier and more supportive environment for all Virginia Tech athletes.
