Press Release: Virginia Beach Hosts Baseball Event to Combat Alzheimer’s Disease
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — First Colonial High School’s baseball field transformed into a venue of hope and community spirit as coaches and players rallied against Alzheimer’s disease in honor of local baseball legend Norbie Wilson. The event highlighted Wilson’s nearly decade-long struggle with the illness while celebrating his legacy as a mentor and a passionate advocate for the sport.
Coach Scott Stubbe, who has known Wilson since the late ’80s, expressed his admiration: “He’s always been a person who would help you out. He loves baseball and helping people.” Together with Coach Chris Dotolo, they organized the charity baseball game between Cape Henry and First Colonial, which aimed to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research and support services for affected families. Last year’s event raised nearly $9,000, showcasing strong community involvement.
Wilson himself remains optimistic amid the challenges posed by Alzheimer’s, saying, “I love it; it might help somebody else.” His wife, Candy, revealed that baseball has remained a cornerstone of support, stating, “That’s his purpose in life… right there.”
Eric Stein from the Southeastern Virginia Board of the Alzheimer’s Association noted the urgency of the cause, highlighting that about 165,000 Virginians aged 65 and older are affected by the disease. He mentioned recent advancements in treatment, citing FDA-approved medications aimed at those with early symptoms.
This Virginia Beach event is not just a fundraiser; it’s a testament to the resilience of those living with Alzheimer’s and their families. It aims to raise awareness and foster a sense of community while honoring the enduring spirit of individuals like Norbie Wilson, who continue to inspire despite the challenges they face.
