Starbase Officially Established as New Texas City, Fulfilling Musk’s Vision
In a significant move for a South Texas community long associated with Elon Musk’s aerospace firm, SpaceX, residents have voted overwhelmingly to incorporate the new city of Starbase. On Saturday, 212 out of 218 voters supported the establishment, marking a milestone in Musk’s aspirations for the region. This vote, administered by Cameron County, involved 283 eligible voters.
Located on a 1.5-square-mile stretch of land near the Mexican border, the area, commonly known as Boca Chica, has been pivotal for SpaceX since the company began operations there in 2014. The site serves not only as the company’s primary launch facility but also as home for many of its employees. Musk has frequently referred to Boca Chica as Starbase on social media, expressing his fondness for the community and his modest residence there.
The initiative to formally create Starbase gained traction in December when local residents, numbering approximately 500—which includes about 219 primary residents and more than 100 children—filed a petition detailing their desire for official municipal status. Most residents are employed by SpaceX and reside in rental properties.
As a newly incorporated city, Starbase will have the authority to establish its own police and fire departments and enact local ordinances. Legal experts highlight that municipalities like Starbase can access state and federal grants, gain certain legal immunities, and handle property-related decisions independently.
Musk celebrated the vote’s outcome, stating, "Starbase started with one shovel," emphasizing the community’s journey and potential growth. As Starbase embarks on this new chapter, local leaders and residents anticipate the impact this status will have on the future of their unique and rapidly evolving community.
