A Chronology of India-Pakistan Tensions Regarding Kashmir

Rising Tensions: India and Pakistan on the Brink of Conflict Over Kashmir

In a chilling escalation of animosity, India and Pakistan find themselves on the verge of military confrontation following a devastating terrorist attack on April 22 that claimed 26 lives in Indian-administered Kashmir. India has accused Pakistan of facilitating the attack, a claim vehemently denied by Pakistani officials.

The historical backdrop of the Kashmir conflict has roots dating back to the partition of British India in 1947, which divided the region into the Muslim-majority Pakistan and predominantly Hindu India. The status of Kashmir remained unresolved, leading to immediate military confrontations and subsequent wars between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

After the first war in 1947, a United Nations-mediated cease-fire resulted in a division of Kashmir, known as the Line of Control, though intended as a temporary measure. Over the years, repeated skirmishes erupted, including a significant conflict in 1965 and again in 1999, when both nations faced off over militants crossing into Indian territory.

The situation deteriorated drastically in August 2019 when the Indian government revoked Kashmir’s special status, leading to a heavy military presence and strict controls, including internet blackouts, in the region. This action initially lowered violence but failed to ensure lasting peace, as demonstrated by the recent attack that has rekindled public outcry and international concern.

Following the recent attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to take decisive action against those behind it, hinting at possible military responses. Political leaders in India appear determined to build a case for confrontation, with the international community closely monitoring the escalating situation. Pakistan’s offer to cooperate with inquiries, however, does little to ease tensions as both nations prepare for potential conflict over the long-disputed territory.
