Caleb Mourning Arrested for Fraud Following Virginia Officers’ Deaths
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Authorities have arrested 25-year-old Caleb Mourning of Norfolk for an alleged fraud scheme that emerged shortly after the tragic deaths of two Virginia Beach police officers. Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese were fatally shot on February 21 during a traffic stop for an expired registration.
In the wake of this incident, the Virginia Beach Police Department issued warnings to the public about potential fake fundraisers exploiting community support for the officers’ families. Investigators have since uncovered Mourning’s attempts to cash in on the outpouring of sympathy and donations meant for the bereaved families of Girvin and Reese.
According to police, Mourning was apprehended on March 20, and while he did not manage to collect any funds, he now faces serious legal repercussions. He has been charged with felony offenses including computer fraud, embezzlement or larceny exceeding $1,000, and obtaining money by false pretenses, also surpassing $1,000.
The Virginia Beach Police Department expressed gratitude for the community’s support, saying, “On behalf of the VBPD, we thank everyone within our community and across the country that has shown their support for our department, and for the loved ones of Cameron and Christopher.”
The department has urged those wishing to contribute to the officers’ families to only use the verified fundraisers they have announced. As investigations continue, the community remains vigilant against scams that prey on their generosity during difficult times.
