Virginia Moves Forward with Policy to Ban Transgender Girls from Competing on Female High School Sports Teams

VHSL to Finalize Controversial Policy on Transgender Athletes in Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is set to finalize its contentious policy on transgender athletes during a meeting this week, following a recent executive order from President Trump. The VHSL previously voted in February to ban transgender girls from competing on female sports teams, a decision that has stirred significant debate within the community.

Executive Director Billy Haun stated that the VHSL’s aim is to adhere to legal mandates. “We’re not a league or an organization that wants to be in contempt of the law,” he explained, emphasizing the necessity to comply with the executive order titled "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports."

The policy adjustments specifically alter clauses concerning transgender participation, stating that students assigned male at birth, identifying as transgender females, are barred from competing on girls’ teams, with the sole exception of cheerleading. This rule impacts current transgender athletes who will now also lose eligibility to compete on female teams.

Advocates for transgender rights are voicing their concerns. Shannon McKay, Executive Director of He She Ze and We, criticized the VHSL’s decision, noting the longstanding acceptance of transgender athletes in Virginia sports. She highlighted that previous guidelines required athletes to appeal for participation based on their gender identity, which resultantly saw 27 out of 30 appeals approved in the last four years.

In contrast, Attorney General Jason Miyares and the conservative Family Foundation have praised the move, asserting that biological differences dictate fairness in sports. Miyares framed the ban as an effort to protect female athletes’ rights, while the Family Foundation emphasized the need for safety and fairness in competition.

As Wednesday approaches, the VHSL intends to ratify the policy, which advocates fear may further marginalize the transgender community’s participation in athletics.
