Virginia Primary Election Set for June 17
Voters across Virginia will head to the polls on June 17 to select candidates for key leadership positions, including attorney general, lieutenant governor, and the Virginia General Assembly. Early voting begins on May 2.
The June primary presents an opportunity for Virginians to nominate candidates for statewide offices, and in some cases, for the Virginia House of Delegates. Currently, Democrats control both chambers of the state legislature, while Republicans hold the governorship under Governor Glenn Youngkin. The outcome in the November general election could redefine the state’s political landscape.
Key dates for the upcoming election include:
- In-person early voting: May 2 through June 14
- Deadline for registration: May 27
- Mail-in ballot applications: Due by June 6
- Election Day: June 17, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Both Democratic and Republican primaries will be held, with 133 counties hosting Democratic contests and only 31 offering Republican options. Voters can check their registration status and polling places online, and same-day registration is available for those who miss the deadlines.
Among the candidates, Republican Winsome Earle-Sears seeks the governorship, facing Democrat Abigail Spanberger. Attorney General Jason Miyares is running unopposed in the Republican primary, while two Democrats, Shannon Taylor and Jay Jones, vie for their party’s nomination.
In the lieutenant governor race, John Reid is currently the only Republican candidate, although his campaign has faced scrutiny. The Democratic primary features six candidates, including former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney.
In total, 100 seats in the House of Delegates will be contested in November, with primaries already established for both parties across various districts.
