UVA Baseball Clinches NCAA Tournament Spot with Series Win Over Virginia Tech
Blacksburg, VA – Freshman left-handed pitcher Tomas Valincius led the Virginia Cavaliers baseball team to a crucial 3-1 victory against Virginia Tech on Saturday, solidifying their position for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The win marked the Cavaliers’ 12th victory in their final 14 games, concluding the regular season with an impressive record of 32-17 and 16-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Valincius delivered a standout performance on the mound, pitching six and two-thirds innings, striking out six batters while conceding just one run on six hits. His strong outing was pivotal for a team that needed a confident showing, further enhancing his record to 6-1 this season with a 4.59 ERA. Relief pitchers Alex Markus and Matt Lazendorfer sealed the game, with Lazendorfer earning his fifth save with a flawless ninth inning.
The Cavaliers took an early lead when first baseman Chris Arroyo launched a two-run homer in the first inning. Although Virginia Tech responded with a leadoff homer from left fielder Ben Watson, UVA maintained control of the game.
