Take the case of Class of 2025 alumna Sophia Ditty. While studying abroad in Madrid on February 11, 2023, she celebrated the Virginia men’s basketball team’s exhilarating overtime victory against Duke. “We were so excited that U.Va. beat Duke,” Ditty recalls, highlighting how a thrilling sports moment can transcend geographical barriers. Although she wasn’t a hardcore sports fan growing up, her involvement with Virginia basketball enriched her college experience, fostering community spirit.
Similarly, fourth-year student Nathan Snow, who previously only engaged with sports through the marching band, transformed his relationship with athletics after attending U.Va. He noted, “The atmosphere of the stadium ignited the same excitement in me,” illustrating how lively events can in turn engage students who may not have had much interest in sports prior to their arrival.
Emily Mortman, another fourth-year student, also found herself captivated by Virginia Athletics. Initially attending games to support her boyfriend, she later realized her genuine enthusiasm for the sport during a nail-biting basketball game against Pittsburgh. “If I’m not actually watching, I’m losing so much of the experience,” she said.
