Virginia Derby Secures Future as Kentucky Derby Qualifier

NEW KENT, VA — In an exciting turn for horse racing in Virginia, the recent Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs marked the state’s debut as a qualifier for the prestigious Kentucky Derby. American Promise triumphed at the March 15 event, securing his spot at Churchill Downs for the May 3 race. However, the horse did not replicate his winning form, finishing in 16th place at the Kentucky Derby.

Virginia Derby spokeswoman Erica Hammett confirmed that the event will continue as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series, with 2026 scheduled for another qualifying race. "The official schedule will be announced later this year," she stated.

The Virginia Derby, now moved to March to better align with the qualifying timeline, was a strategic decision by Hall of Fame trainer Wayne Lukas, who was 89 during the event. "The schedule worked out perfectly. Adding the Virginia Derby to the qualifying series is a great move," Lukas remarked, noting the event’s potential to attract even more interest in the future.

Lukas praised the experience at Colonial Downs, highlighting the warm hospitality from Governor Glenn Youngkin and his wife, Suzanne, who even sent him a handwritten note. "Virginia racing has a bright future; it’s a beautiful place destined to thrive," he added.

The race witnessed a vibrant atmosphere with over 8,000 attendees celebrating this historic day for Virginia sports. Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Inc., expressed pride in the event and its implications for the state’s racing resurgence, further solidifying Virginia’s role in the nation’s horse racing landscape.
