Spanberger Launches First TV Ad in Virginia Governor’s Race
Democratic former Rep. Abigail Spanberger has debuted her first television advertisement as she enters the highly anticipated 2025 Virginia governor’s race. The 60-second spot, shared first with NBC News, emphasizes Spanberger’s diverse background, including her experience in the CIA and her collaborative work in Congress.
“Too many politicians talk when they should listen and divide instead of unite. Enough is enough,” Spanberger asserts in the ad, aiming to resonate with voters as one of the closely monitored elections this year, alongside New Jersey’s gubernatorial race. Virginia’s election is viewed as a crucial indicator of the political climate heading into the 2026 midterms.
Spanberger will face Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, with both parties having uncontested primaries. Her ads will be featured in the Richmond and Norfolk media markets, supported by an initial ad buy of $141,000, bringing total campaign ad spending to $643,000, according to AdImpact.
In her advertisement, Spanberger outlines her priorities, pledging to lower costs, enhance public school quality, and highlight her role as a mother of three girls attending Virginia schools. The ad also references rising unemployment claims linked to federal government cuts, hinting at a potential challenge in the upcoming election as the state is home to a significant number of federal workers.
Earle-Sears has launched her own campaign announcements, spending $873,000 on two separate ads that showcase her military service and collaboration with Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is unable to run for re-election due to term limits.
While Democrats have recently succeeded at the federal level in Virginia, experts predict a competitive race ahead, especially after Youngkin won his first term in 2021 by a narrow margin of 2 points.
