AP Decision Notes: What to Anticipate in Virginia’s Primaries

Virginia Democrats Prepare for Crucial Primary Elections

WASHINGTON (AP) – Virginia Democrats are gearing up for a pivotal six-way primary for the lieutenant governor position and a contested fight for attorney general on Tuesday. Voters will also select nominees for the state House of Delegates as they prepare for the November general election.

At the helm, Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Democratic U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger are unopposed for their gubernatorial nominations. Candidates for the Democratic lieutenant governor nomination include state Senators Ghazala Hashmi and Aaron Rouse, among others. Levar Stoney, former Richmond Mayor, has garnered significant endorsements and leads in fundraising, bringing in $2.1 million since his campaign’s launch. Rouse closely follows with $1.8 million, aided by endorsements from influential lawmakers. Hashmi is reportedly in a good position with nearly $462,000 in campaign funds as of June 5.

The attorney general race features former delegate Jay Jones and Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor vying for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Jason Miyares. Jones has achieved significant fundraising success, with $2.7 million overall, while Taylor has managed to out-raise him in recent weeks.

With a full slate of 100 House of Delegates seats up for election, only 15 involve contested primaries. Democrats currently hold thin majorities in both the state House and Senate.

As the primaries approach, Northern Virginia and Richmond areas are expected to play crucial roles in Democratic turnout. As of early May, 6.3 million voters were registered in Virginia, with early Democratic ballots significantly outpacing Republican efforts.

Polls close at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, and results will be closely monitored, with the Associated Press poised to declare winners once results are confirmed.
