Press Release: Local Program Supports Exceptional Young Athletes with Disabilities
In a heartwarming initiative, the Grafton Integrated Health Network has joined forces with Chris Rhone from Unique Hoops Academy to create the SUPERB basketball team, aimed at empowering children with physical and mental disabilities in the Shenandoah Valley. Each spring and fall, as part of this collaboration, special and unique young athletes come together on Saturdays to learn and play basketball.
Samuel Butler from Grafton, who played a vital role in developing the program, explains, “We wanted to create an opportunity for clients to experience team dynamics outside of Grafton.” His grandson’s participation has inspired a deep commitment to fostering inclusivity.
Teams are organized based on individual skills rather than age, making the program accessible for all levels. What began as a basic basketball skills lesson has blossomed into a community-building venture that transcends the sport. “We’re doing more than just building confidence—we’re unlocking opportunities and helping turn dreams into reality for each and every child,” Rhone emphasizes.
The initiative serves as more than just a sports program; it reinforces the values of teamwork, friendship, and personal growth among participants. Parents and guardians have expressed gratitude, noting the positive transformations they witness in their children, both on and off the court.
