Mattie Carney Named Captain of Class AA All-State Team

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. – The Oak Glen Golden Bears have a notable star in sophomore Mattie Carney, who has been appointed captain of the Class AA All-West Virginia team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. Her exceptional performance helped guide the Golden Bears to their second state championship in program history this season.

Carney achieved an impressive record of 20-7 as a pitcher with a staggering 223 strikeouts and only 28 walks, resulting in an astounding 8-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Offensively, she batted .431 with four home runs, 27 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases. Throughout the postseason, Carney pitched every game, demonstrating her endurance and commitment to her team.

“Her investment and drive to win truly set her apart,” said Oak Glen coach Sherrie Garner. “Mattie is a fierce competitor and a key contributor on both sides of the plate.”

Carney is one of four pitchers on the first team, joining St. Marys’ Cali Masters, Logan’s Myleigh Adkins, and Wheeling Central’s Josie Frizzell, all of whom boast impressive stats and have been recognized as first-team all-state throughout their careers.

Additionally, fellow senior Riley Bruce, who also played a pivotal role for Oak Glen, ended her season with a batting average of .325, contributing 44 runs scored. Coach Garner praised Bruce for her athleticism and leadership on the field.

Carney, Bruce, and their team of dedicated athletes have made significant strides this season, supported by a close-knit group of seniors, including Addie Smith, Maddie Murray, and Kayla Wright. The Golden Bears’ achievements underscore their commitment and hard work, marking a bright future for the program.
