Tresz McLeod Named 2024-25 Gatorade Player of the Year
WHEELING — Wheeling Park’s standout athlete, Tresz McLeod, has been honored as the 2024-25 Gatorade West Virginia Boys Soccer Player of the Year, a prestigious recognition given annually since 1985. Before heading to George Mason University to continue his soccer career, McLeod adds this accolade to his impressive resume.
The Gatorade Player of the Year Award celebrates exceptional high school student-athletes who showcase outstanding athleticism, academic excellence, and character. McLeod embodies these qualities, having scored 39 goals and recorded 18 assists this past season, leading the Wheeling Park Patriots to the Class AAA state semifinals. He was recognized as the Class AAA Player of the Year by the West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association and earned First Team All-State honors four times.
Morgantown High School coach Sam Snyder praised McLeod, stating, "He was an absolute beast…one of the most dangerous players we’ve had in West Virginia." With a total of 118 career goals and 60 assists, McLeod’s talent is unmistakable.
Beyond soccer, McLeod is actively involved in his community. He is a self-taught barber who volunteers at local organizations including the Greater Soup Kitchen of Wheeling and the Ohio County Relay for Life. Additionally, he has taken roles as a youth soccer coach, teen mentor, and member of his church’s youth group. Remarkably, McLeod has also maintained a 3.98 GPA despite being diagnosed with a learning disability in third grade.
As one of 50 state winners competing for the national title, McLeod will also receive a grant to donate to a social impact organization of his choice. This accolade marks him as the third recipient from Wheeling Park High School, joining former winners Vinny Crumrine (2006-2007) and Ken Zinsky (1990-1992).
