Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia has announced the launch of the Virginia 250 Preservation Fund in anticipation of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the 1776 U.S. Declaration of Independence. With $20 million in state funds allocated for historic preservation projects across Virginia, the Department of Historic Resources (DHR) will administer the program.

The special fund aims to support capital improvement projects at historic sites and museums in preparation for the semiquincentennial celebration in 2026. Governor Youngkin emphasized the importance of preserving Virginia’s rich historical heritage and ensuring that the state is ready to host millions of visitors for the milestone event.

Virginia Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources Travis Voyles expressed gratitude for the funding, highlighting the lasting impact it will have on future generations. DHR Director Julie Langan also praised Governor Youngkin and the General Assembly for providing essential funding for historic preservation efforts.

The program will distribute funds through a two-step application process, with preapplications currently being accepted until August 30. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, Virginia localities, and state-recognized Indian tribes that own or have support from the property owner of historic sites or museums.

Priority will be given to projects involving properties listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register, the National Register of Historic Places, National Historic Landmarks, or those deemed eligible for such listing by DHR.
