Immigration lawyers have been warned to take extra security measures or stay away from work due to far-right threats targeting their firms, as legal groups blame political attacks for fueling abuse. The Law Society and Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association have stated that their members are at risk. This warning comes after a list of up to 60 immigration advice centres was circulated, leading to concerns about potential protests.
Several prominent lawyers have attributed the far-right threat to the political rhetoric of Conservative politicians demonising “lefty lawyers” working on asylum cases. After violent disorder in various areas, police have deployed additional riot-trained officers to combat unrest, with some individuals potentially facing terrorism charges.
Violence has targeted mosques, community buildings, hotels housing asylum seekers, and shops, but recent attention has turned to immigration law and advice centres, with concerns raised by politicians and organizations about potential attacks on these facilities.
The Law Society of England and Wales has expressed concern to government officials about the “direct assault” on legal professionals, emphasizing the need to uphold democratic values and protect those providing immigration advice.
Lawyers working in this field have become increasingly fearful for their safety, with some stating that political attacks on immigration lawyers have put them at risk of physical harm. Calls have been made for the government to take urgent action to address these threats and protect the safety of legal professionals upholding human rights. More riot officers have been deployed to deal with potential demonstrations and violence, with over 400 arrests made so far. In response to the escalating situation, political figures have urged for an end to the violence and for a society that welcomes and protects all communities in need. Police are investigating the credibility of online documents listing potential targets, many of which are linked to immigration and asylum issues.
