Virginia Living Presents: The Virginia House-Wife Recipes

The Virginia House-Wife, a historic cooking manual by Mary Randolph, has been reissued on its 200th anniversary by Rebecca Suerdieck in partnership with Virginiana Press and Historic Tuckahoe. This collection features recipes using ingredients commonly available in Virginia in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as household hints for making soap, lotions, and perfumes. The book is available for purchase on Amazon.

To celebrate the reissue, here are some additional recipes directly from Mary Randolph’s original collection. These recipes include a quire of paper pancakes, bread pudding, trifle, vanilla cream, sweet potato buns, apple fritters, as well as instructions for preparing cosmetic soap for washing hands and cleaning silver utensils.

The quire of paper pancakes recipe includes 16 eggs, a quart of milk, flour, butter, sugar, wine, and nutmeg. The bread pudding recipe features stale bread crumbs soaked in milk, eggs, butter, sugar, brandy, and lemon peel. The trifle recipe involves layers of cake, custard, whipped cream, and preserves, decorated beautifully. The vanilla cream recipe uses milk infused with vanilla, eggs, and sugar to create a sweet frozen treat.

Additionally, there are recipes for sweet potato buns, apple fritters, as well as instructions for making cosmetic soap and cleaning silver utensils. These recipes offer a glimpse into the culinary and household practices of the past, as documented in the historic Virginia House-Wife manual.
